Magdalen College Choir

The Choir of Magdalen College Oxford is one of the most famous and historic in the musical world. It has been part of the college since its foundation, and the education of its choristers has been amongst the most important functions of MCS. As well as singing term time services in the College Chapel, the choristers have an extensive schedule of broadcasts and recordings, and tour regularly both in this country and abroad.

Choristerships
The sixteen boy choristers all benefit from generous scholarships. They combine singing to the highest standards with school work, sport and their other interests. During university terms the schedule is busy, but in contrast to many cathedral choirs, Magdalen choristers are day pupils. The school and college work closely together to manage the boys' commitments, and choristers enjoy the unique benefit of being part of a historic foundation, which seamlessly links primary, secondary and tertiary education.

Auditions
Auditions are usually held in October and January, but boys can sometimes be heard at other times of year as well, and we are always pleased to hear from interested families. Prospective choristers need a good musical ear and enthusiasm for singing; we do not expect trained singers. Please contact the Assistant Registrar or the Chapel and Choir Administrator, Jacky Barratt, for further information, including details of open days, and visit the Choir pages on the Magdalen College website. A leaflet containing more information about Choristerships is available here, and for information about informal chorister auditions click here.

After choristership
Boys usually leave the choir at the end of year 8 - or occasionally sooner if the treble voice changes earlier - and most continue at MCS to complete their school career. Many win music scholarships and places at junior conservatoires, or university choral and organ scholarships. Most continue to sing or play an instrument in later life, either simply for pleasure, or professionally. Many of course are household names.

Choristers' outstanding and broad musical education is complemented by other aspects of their training, including time-management, working in different languages, and close teamwork. Occasional formal dinners in College even add useful social skills too!
