Magdalen College School plays a wide variety of sports. The major sports are rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis. A wide variety of minor sports flourish, in particular athletics, sailing, chess, rowing and most recently badminton.
The school fields strong, competitive teams in rugby, hockey, cricket and tennis at all ages, and every year large numbers of pupils gain representative honours. Many have gone on to represent the region and a number have been selected for England. The school regularly wins competitions at county, regional and even national level.
MCS has a policy of sport for all, and seeks to attract and develop young sportspeople of the highest calibre.School Field provides a stunning centre piece for MCS sport and the school is uniquely fortunate in having access to a first class range of college and university facilities. These include the Christ Church, Magdalen and Merton playing fields and the University ports Centre and Pool at Iffley Road. The Oxford Hawkes' water-based astroturfs are used daily during the hockey term, and rowers have direct access to the river from school, whilst the sailing club make considerable use of the facilities at Farmoor. Year round fitness training is encouraged in our state of the art fitness-suite. A structured Sports Academy provides year round training for our most promising sportspeople.
There is a rigorous programme of tours, taking in venues in the UK, Europe and the Southern Hemisphere, and a wide-ranging and competitive fixture list. Fixtures take place midweek and at weekends versus Abingdon, St.Edward's, Bloxham, Cheltenham College, Rugby, Oratory, Pangbourne, Shiplake, Wellingborough, The Perse, KE VIth Southampton, Dean Close, Warwick, Bedford, Bradfield, Stowe, Winchester House, The Dragon, Abingdon Preparatory School, and Moulsford. County and National Cups are also entered.
