Academic

The school places a high priority on the need to provide the best possible support for pupils with special educational needs: we wish to ensure that no pupil's academic progress is held back by any kind of learning difficulty.

Pupils are screened in years 5, 7 and 9. Some pupils are referred for further testing in school. In addition, there is provision for assessment by a visiting Educational Psychologist, Mr John Noble.

Once an assessment has been made, a pupil may receive additional one-to one teaching sessions for as long as it is considered necessary. Support and help is also given to pupils with learning difficulties by specialist subject teachers in the school and can also be arranged with outside agencies. An Individual Education Plan is drawn up for all pupils on the Learning Support roll which enables the tutor and teachers to provide the necessary support and help.

The department also:

  • runs Study Skills courses which focus on revision skills, exam technique and essay writing.
  • organises additional lessons for pupils for whom English is not their first language.
  • offers a 'touch-typing' course in Year 9, of particular use to pupils with dyslexia and/or dyspraxia.
